A WOMAN OF NOBLE CHARACTER

Today’s Reading:

I Samuel 25: 1-38

“Then she told her servants Go on ahead; I will follow you. But she did not tell her husband Nabal.” ( I Samuel 25:19)

The story of Mrs. Abigail and Mr. Nabal is a popular story in the scripture. Though marriage was ordained by God, but devil is fighting tooth and nail to proof to God that what he ordained can’t stand. As good as marriage is, it could be a prison for some. If Mrs. Abigail is alive today am sure she will have stories to tell about her husband. Though she had challenges which are a common denominator to every Christian marriage but to every problem there is a solution. Let’s get a glimpse from this story and learn from her possibly as a woman, you are reading this devotional.

Curriculum Vitae of the family (1 Samuel 25:2-3)

  • The man was very rich/wealthy

  • He had 3,000 sheep and 1,000 goats

  • His name is Nabal

  • The wife is called Abigail

  • Nabal means fool while Abigail means father’s joy

How they met before marriage, the Bible didn’t tell us but one thing we saw was that though Nabal was from the lineage of Caleb, he was a disgrace to that lineage because we know Caleb to be of good character in his life time. One could imagine how Mr. Fool got married to Mrs. Father’s joy, what an opposite. Some homes are like that today where the spouses are totally opposite in character and attitude. Permit me to say that Mr. Nabal didn’t know God because as his name sounds, a fool says in his heart that there is no God while Mrs. Abigail had a relationship with God. Two masters in the same home.

If it were to be in our present world, some people will advise the woman to call it quits but divorce is not an option as far as God is concerned. Danger was looming in that family, the man didn’t care what will happen but the woman of noble character flung into action and rescued her household. What a great lesson for couples to learn here. Once you are married, all you need to do is to look for solution to the problem of your home and not divorce. The singles should pray well before entering into marriage so as to avoid some potholes in the future. Is your marriage a prison? Are you tired of your husband or wife? Are you out of your home already? Call on Jesus to help you.

JAMES ALADE
