Today’s Reading:

I Chronicles 21: 1- 17

"And David said to God, 'I am the one who called for the census! I am the one who has sinned and done wrong! But these people are as innocent as sheep — what have they done? O Lord my God, let your anger fall against me and my family, but do not destroy your people.”

 (I Chronicles 21:17 (NLT)

When this chapter is compared with 2 Samuel 24, it is not at first clear who was behind David’s sin of numbering the people. Second, Samuel says that the Lord moved David to number Israel because His anger was kindled against the nation. Here, we are told that Satan incited the action. Both statements are, of course, true. God allowed Satan to tempt David. God is not the author of evil, but He permits it and causes it to serve His appointed ends. One could assume that David was moved by the number of the Israelites and that pride set in. Number or attitude as a way of intoxicating a leader. It makes one see himself as self-sufficient or powerful or important to have achieved a great feat. When King Nebuchadnezzar looked at his empire, he said:

“As he looked out across the city, he said, ‘Look at this great city of Babylon! By my mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic plendour.’ (Daniel 4:30)

Pride can make a leader do some rash things. Nebuchadnezzar regretted his statements because he was cast down and he ate with animals for seven years. The decision of David to count the people brought grave consequences to the extent that 70,000 people died, leading to a reduction in their number. In all of these calamities, there was no record that any member of David’s family lost their lives. Leaders are human, and they can err. One decision of a leader can either make or mar a generation. And the consequences will not only be on them.

As Christians, we need to check and check again our decisions before implementing them. Homes today have been shattered because someone made a wrong decision. Nations are suffering today just because of a particular decision taken by the few leading them. Naomi could not have become Marah if not for the decision to leave the house of bread for a strange land. Every leader at every level should greatly consider the consequences before embarking on any major decision, as some decisions are irreversible. Have you been the victim of any decision taken either by your parent or any leader? God can do the unthinkable if only you will come to Him in prayer. He can rewrite your stories and deliver you from consequences of wrong decisions either taken by you or others. Let’s pray!

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer

  1. My father, my father, whatever my parents have done that is affecting my destiny, the blood of Jesus erases them in Jesus’ name.

  2. Whatever I have lost due to past wrong decisions, by your mercy, restore them unto me in Jesus’ name.

  3. I erase every negative consequence fighting my destiny, in Jesus’ name.

  4. I receive grace to make right and godly decisions as of today, in Jesus’ name.
