DOES GOD EXPLOIT US?

Today’s Readings:

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Psalm 33:12-13,18-21

Matthew 25:14-30

We have been looking at the Parable of the Talents wrongly. We generally presume that it is a parable about a master and his servants; an exploitation. He gives them money to trade for him while he jets off to an exotic location to chill. Upon his return, he rewards those who made profit and punishes the one who was lazy and insulting. Let us look at the parable again this time from the point of view of a relationship between friends.

So, three friends were invited for a hang-out by their buddy. He tells them that he is going on a trip and will be away for a while. After a few drinks, he credits their accounts and tells them to use the money well and he will see them when he returns. He knows his friends so well, so he gives them such amount of money as they can manage without becoming overwhelmed. The first two traded with what they received and made profit. The last one was suspicious of this ‘guy-man’ so he withdraws the money and hides it in a table drawer at home.

The shocking twist happens when our friend returns from his trip and discloses to his friends that the money he gave them and whatever profit they have made belongs to them. It was his way of keeping them busy while he was away. In fact, seeing how enterprising they are, he makes them his business partners. The last guy, discovers that the joke is on him and that he was never truly a trusted friend.

Here are a few things to bear in mind:

  • You are God’s child and He has gifted you with all you will ever have.

  • God gains nothing from blessing you.

  • How you treat people’s belongings is a true reflection of your character.

  • Pessimism kills any dream before it has a chance to grow.

  • Joy and blessings are not found in having more but in putting what you have to good use.

  • God believes you will succeed with the gift He gave you. Do you believe in yourself?

  • What you love reveals who you are: Do you love God or His gifts?

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, be my help and my shield.

  2. Lord, let my heart find joy in You.

  3. Lord, make me a trustworthy friend.

  4. Lord, I trust in the power of Your name.

  5. Lord, renew and strengthen me by Your grace.

  6. Lord, set us apart for your blessings. Amen.

  7. Lord, your love is closer and warmer than a parent's or a friend's. Lord Jesus, I trust in You. I know that Your plans for me are for good and in You I am truly blessed. Keep me faithful to You. Amen.
