Today’s Reading:
II Samuel 15 vs 1 – 13
The scripture above talks about the rebellion of Absalom, the son of King David, and how he carried out a coup de tat, as it were, against his father, David. The scripture is instructive to parents, local community, and the society at large. Like the local parlance goes, there is no smoke without fire. The origin of this event can be traced to 2nd Samuel 11 and 12 when David slept with the wife of one of his soldiers, and killed him using the sword of the enemies of Israel. The incident attracted a curse from God, that rebellion will emanate from his own household (2nd Samuel 12 vs 10 – 12) against him. Part of the manifestation of that curse is what we are seeing in 2nd Samuel 15. Absalom meticulously executed a plan to overthrow his father as king of Israel. He succeeded, and this led to David fleeing Israel. What led to the present situation which saw David fleeing from Absalom started with the incest among his children and eventual death of one his sons, Amnon, (2nd Samuel 13).
Take away from the passages:
Sin is destructive, individually and corporately.
It is not only the sinner that suffers the consequence. Others who are innocent of it suffer as well. It was David who sinned, the accompanying curse led to incest and murder.
Parents need to pray fervently for their children, and to always personally engage them in open discussions about issues concerning their lives. In this age of the internet, children are exposed to so many things.
Many parents make the kind of mistake David did. When Absalom killed his brother Amnon for raping his sister Tamar, and Absalom was banished, David never bothered to see him. This eventually led to the rebellion.
The consequence of sin lasts many generations.
It is therefore imperative that we make every effort to draw our children, and our household close to God.
