RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR CHILDREN

Today’s Reading:

Psalm 78: 1-4, 52-72  (4)

“We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”                     (v. 4)

This Scripture was intended to be instruction for the children of Israel. Some Bible scholars had hints that it was written at the time of the divided kingdom. The Northern tribes had fallen because they had forgotten God and drifted off to the idols of their pagan neighbours. Judah was also in danger of doing the same things her brothers and sisters had done up North. So Psalm 78 was written for a nation divided and in danger of forgetting the God whom they said they trusted. The passage is very direct about our responsibility to teach our children and pass on to them what we have learned. So if we don’t want our children to miss the deep hidden lessons of the past, we must instruct them carefully.

We must teach them the message of the praiseworthy deeds of God, His power and the wonders He has done. Preaching on the mighty acts of God must be honest. Psalm 78 has ferocious descriptions of what God did to the Israelites when they wandered away from Him. There are consequences for disobedience.  That is part of the story that must be told. God cares about obedience. The source of our disobedience is forgetting the God who is part of our lives. When we remember and rely on Him, obedience follows naturally. We must also emphasize grace, particularly with Jesus.

For the sake of our children, let us keep telling the story of Jesus and His love.

BABALOLA IKOTUN

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Father Lord, help and enable me to be able to teach my children the praiseworthy deeds of God, in the name of Jesus.

  2. As God divided the Red Sea to make good the deliverance of Israelites from the bondage of slavery in Egypt, let every demonic roadblock mounted against answers to my prayers be dismantled and removed, in Jesus' name.

  3. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ shall not depart from my life, in Jesus' name.
