God loves weddings, and so should you. In the words of the Prophet Isaiah, “No longer are you to be named ‘Forsaken’, nor your land ‘Abandoned’, but you shall be called ‘My Delight’ and your land ‘The Wedded’; for the Lord takes delight in you and your land will have its wedding” (Isaiah 62:4). Marriage is a serious commitment; it demands maturity, stability, generosity, decisiveness, focus, a willingness to forgive, faithfulness and exclusivity. Immature people are mostly indecisive, fearful and selfish pleasure-seekers. Do you seek God with a mature and sincere heart, or are you undecided?

Just as God claimed Israel as His own despite her infidelity to Him through sin, He wishes to claim us for Himself, cleansing us from our sins and unfaithfulness. Why does God love us so much? It is hard to say, but we can start from the point that He created us in His image and likeness, and no other creature has this unique privilege (Genesis 1:27). God also wants us to realise how much we are loved and blessed. An awareness of God’s love for us should inspire our love for one another.

Here are some reasons we should imitate God’s generous love:

  • We are God’s children, the New Israel, and His model of perfect love.

  • We have all been blessed with gifts by the Holy Spirit to serve one another.

  • There are so many gifts and none is more important or better than another; your gift is just as important as those of others. So, give no room for envy.

  • God knows your strengths and weaknesses and so He gifts you in a way that is best suited to your interests and motivations.

  • You either lead people closer to God or away from Him by the right or wrong use of your gifts.

  • Jesus wants to share your joy and your sorrow. He wants to be your joy in every situation.

  • Do whatever Jesus tells you just as Mary has advised us.

  • Run to Jesus at every moment and in every situation, good or bad.

  • God’s glory is revealed when you call upon Him.

  • Jesus comes where He is invited.

  • Place the love of God at the heart of the love you show to others.

  • Lighten the burden of others. Do not be a burden either to those who are celebrating or those who are mourning.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, You love me with an everlasting love. Help me to respond positively to Your generous love.

  2. Let Your love for me (through the Holy Spirit) be the inspiration for my generosity, love and service to my neighbour.

  3. As I imitate your generosity, fill me with your bountiful grace through Christ our Lord. Amen.
