WHAT IT TAKES TO SEE JESUS

Today’s Reading:

John 12:20-36

They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee with a request, “Sir”, they said; “we would like to see Jesus”. (John 12:21 NIV)

To humans, seeing is to look or discuss with humans, but to Jesus, seeing is to know or talk about someone. Seeing has a different meaning but, the context of the Bible passages we are to study today is Jesus’ meaning of seeing.

When some of the Greeks came to worship at the feast (Jewish festival), they met with Jesus’ disciple called Philip, wanting to see Jesus. Probably they wanted to discuss their problems with Him or to sit under His teaching asking questions. When Philip and Andrew told Jesus about it, Jesus made us know about seeing Him in v. 24. He spoke in proverbs to us which means His death and resurrection. Jesus is telling you and I, that to see Him is to know His death and resurrection. Jesus’ death and resurrection are for a special purpose: to rescue mankind from Satan’s power; to give His life as a ransom to buy us back; to destroy the works of Satan in our lives; to give us eternal life; to give us new birth into God’s family, and to restore our fellowship with God the Father.

Everything we need to know about Jesus is His death and resurrection because of what he had done for us. We do not need to come to Jesus because of our predicament, but rather come to Jesus to be saved. When we are saved, the power of His death and resurrection will give us victory over our challenges and predicament. In verse 26, Jesus says, “Whoever serves me must follow me;… My Father will honour the one who serves me”. seeing Jesus is to serve and follow Him. When God honours you, your predicament is gone, your challenges are gone, and you will have peace within you. Seeing Jesus is to follow Him and obey His teaching.
