March 27 is ‘Tansi Day.’ This is an excellent source of joy for us Nigerians. After all, for the first time in our history and the history of the Church in Nigeria, we have a beatified soul (a saint in the making) that looks, sounds and understands us because he is one of us. His life serves as a guide to sainthood. His life also reassures us that our struggles in this world are not in vain. Our goal each day should be a life in union with God.

In a day and time when people promote other things that are indicative of fame, power and influence, we need to celebrate holiness of life, moral rectitude, integrity and the dignity of human life. We also need to celebrate equality and the rights of every human person. We need to celebrate people who ground their lives on a relationship with God, fully depending on the grace of God. We need to celebrate those who help those preparing for marriage understand the responsibility that comes with having and caring for a family. We ought to celebrate people for their fight for the marginalised, especially women and children. We should celebrate educators and champions of education who ensure that those who seek education achieve their aspirations. We should celebrate those who are patriotic and passionate about their country and contribute to its well-being. All of these were embodied by Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi (1903-1964). Being truly Christian and contributing to the growth of your nation is not an ambition. It requires no national or international honours. Our reward is with God, who sees all that is done in secret and rewards all according to their actions (Matthew 6:4).

How can we be saintly today?

  • Put the interest of others before your own.

  • Seek God in all your aspirations—nothing else will satisfy you.

  • If you are conscious, you will find God in your daily activities.

  • Be faithful to your state of life and draw closer to God through it.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, thank you for the life of Your servant, Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi.

  2. By Your grace, help me to seek You in all I think, say and do today.

  3. Let the power from Your Word enlighten, strengthen and motivate my actions to the greater glory of Your name. Amen.
